Lara assists people with disabilities in training service dogs. Owners can train a dog to assist them with medical conditions, mobility issues, physical handicaps, or psychiatric disorders.
What is a service dog? According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is “a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.” To learn more about service dogs, visit the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Questions and Answers website.
Service dogs can be trained by owners with the assistance of a Certified Dog Trainer. Why should an owner with disabilities train his/her own dog? Unfortunately, many reputable service dog organizations have a waiting list that can exceed two years! Owner-trained service dogs form a strong bond with their handler and can be successful with the right training. Training a service dog is a commitment of 18-24 months. Only dogs with excellent health, a calm temperament and good manners will be permitted to participate in specialized service dog training. Dogs trained for bite-work or displaying any aggressive behavior cannot be trained as a service dog.
